The Magic Of Being You

By Randal Yasar

Here’s a great book with a wonderful message about self acceptance, individuality and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Follows four forest friends… Bennington the Bear, Finn the Fox, Evie the Elephant, and Harper the Hedgehog. They decide to plan a festival to celebrate the unique qualities that make everyone in their forest community special. Through various acts of bravery and creativity, each character showcases their individual talents. The festival is such a success that it becomes an annual event in the forest! Celebrating self-expression and individuality, reinforcing the message that our differences are a source of strength and beauty. In the back of the book, there’s a page where readers can color their own “festival flags”. I love it when books do this, it really helps teachers. After we read the book, I handed out the flag exercise and the second grade kids all enjoyed themselves creating their own individual flags and presenting them. I really like the message in this book, I think it can encourage acceptance and youngsters to step outside their comfort zone (which is so important). The illustrations complement the text perfectly and are age-appropriate. I hope we can see these characters in future books, as I think this group would be quite suitable for a series. We really enjoyed this book, I highly recommend it for both parents and teachers!

The Little Girl And The Cactus

By Liz Biddle

About a little girl who struggles with making friends, despite her many talents and interests. She often finds herself excluded from group activities, and sometimes even teased by her peers. One night, as she shares her troubles with her mom, gives her some words of wisdom. Mom compares certain people to cacti and other plants. She explains that, like cacti, some people might appear appealing but can be harmful if you get too close. Mom elaborates by describing different types of plants and their unique qualities, suggesting that while some people might be like cacti with protective spines, others can be like willows, sunflowers, or dandelions, each with their own beauty and role in the world. I love books that teach social-emotional skills. Instead of encouraging the little girl to conform or change herself to fit in, the story promotes self-acceptance and the search for authentic connections. Everyone has a place, and every personality type brings value to the world, even if it might not always be compatible with yours. A lesson that is crucial for developing healthy self-esteem in children. This is perfect for the classroom, it sparked an interesting conversation with the third graders and they totally get the message. Also the book contains some interesting facts about different types of cacti, so we went down the cactus rabbit hole on YouTube and learned about different interesting cacti species 🌵 As a follow up homework assignment they each chose a different cacti species and will write a one page species profile (region, looks, it’s place in the eco system, characteristics, special uses, interesting facts, images etc) and then present it in front of the class. I love the message, it’s a great conversation starter and worked well as part of a larger lesson. Definitely recommend adding it to your Children’s Bookshelf!

Mia's Self-Esteem

By Emily Martin

A wonderful story about self-esteem, true friendship and why doing what you love is so important. About a girl who seems on the outside to have it all. Popularity, good grades and captain of the Volleyball team. She pushed herself hard to achieve these things and she knew it made everyone happy. Deep down though she questioned herself a lot, she didn’t realize it but she was working very hard just to get the approval of others. One day she meets a new friend who helps her understand what’s happening. She begins to understand that she doesn’t need to worry about what others think and that she should do what makes her happy more often. She always loved Drama but was afraid what everyone would think … she decided to give it a try. Her dedication and passion for acting helped her improve and eventually realize the importance of doing what you love ❤️ Such an amazing topic and presented beautifully. This whole series is fantastic and definitely worth checking out.
