What Bug Am I?

Author: Skye Wade

Amazing concept for a book🐞 it’s both fiction and non fiction and the author did a wonderful job finding a balance between the two. After each 2 page spread, you’ll will find a few real life images and interesting facts about the insects in the story. It follows a baby spider who isn’t quite sure what kind of bug he is. He befriends a lady bug and she doesn’t know either, so the two set off on a mission to figure this out. They come across a range of different bugs like ants, caterpillars, locusts and moths to name a few. Each time they meet a new insect the reader learns something interesting about each bug. Eventually they meet an old spider and she confirms that he is indeed a baby spider. She offers him some great advice and he happily sets off to create a home for himself 😃 I love the combination of fiction and nonfiction. It’s balanced perfectly and broke the story up in just the right way. I read it with my first graders and they liked it so much, they requested we read it again so we read it twice over🤩 Of course from a teacher’s point of view I’m always looking for books like this as they’re an invaluable tool for teaching. Especially if you can find something loaded with educational content that’s still entertaining (it’s hard to find actually) This book is part of a series including several other books and hopefully more on the way. I hope the author continues to build on this series and follows this formula because it’s a winner 🏆 I’m a huge fan now! Highly recommend checking this out, the world needs more books like this!!

A Spider Story

Author: Aleksander Jasinski

This is such a cute book about a baby spider’s first day out in the world. The story is narrated by Clarence the baby spider. After hatching Clarence begins exploring the outside of the nest. He sees hundreds of other baby spiders all around, and some of them are flying away! Pretty soon Clarence and some new friends discover why these spiders are flying off into the distance and that they too will need to fly away soon. They are taught how to properly use their webs to sail through the air and prepare themselves for this new adventure. They wait their turn and one by one Clarence’s new friends shoot their webbing and sail away into the wind… What will happen to Clarence? Will he ever see his friends again? Such and adorable story. I read it with my first graders and they loved it. The illustrations are fantastic and fit with the text perfectly, I like how cute the spiders are. The author and illustrator both did excellent jobs of presenting the spiders in a very innocent and non-threatening way. There were so many questions about flying spiders afterwards that we went down the rabbit-hole on YouTube and found some AMAZING videos showing how these spiders do it. It was actually quite interesting for everyone (Even teacher learned something new about spiders ☺️) Definitely great for the classroom or as a bedtime story. Also check out the last slide in this post for a backstory about the inspiration behind this story!
