A Spider Story
By Anthony Luke Hyslop
This is such a cute book about a baby spider’s first day out in the world.
The story is narrated by Clarence the baby spider. After hatching Clarence begins exploring the outside of the nest. He sees hundreds of other baby spiders all around, and some of them are flying away! Pretty soon Clarence and some new friends discover why these spiders are flying off into the distance and that they too will need to fly away soon. They are taught how to properly use their webs to sail through the air and prepare themselves for this new adventure. They wait their turn and one by one Clarence’s new friends shoot their webbing and sail away into the wind…
What will happen to Clarence?
Will he ever see his friends again?
Such and adorable story. I read it with my first graders and they loved it. The illustrations are fantastic and fit with the text perfectly, I like how cute the spiders are. The author and illustrator both did excellent jobs of presenting the spiders in a very innocent and non-threatening way. There were so many questions about flying spiders afterwards that we went down the rabbit-hole on YouTube and found some AMAZING videos showing how these spiders do it. It was actually quite interesting for everyone (Even teacher learned something new about spiders ☺️)
Definitely great for the classroom or as a bedtime story.
