The Boy Who Grew A Forest
By: Sophia Gholz
I’m so happy to share this book with you. I’ve always found this man and his story to be incredibly inspirational 🌳🌳 and now I’ve found the book 😃 After we read the book in class, I played a short video about the real life person this book is talking about. We have now decided to start sprouting some of our own seeds in class and later we’ll plant them in a few designated areas! So fun 😆 The book is a true story of a man named Jadav Payeng from India. As a young boy he was very upset that snakes were dying en masse along the shores of a local river. He realized they need shade and places to hide away from the sun. The grown ups in his village gave him some bamboo to plant there. He planted it and tended to it and helped it grow. He also began taking plants and insects from the surrounding area to his new garden. Over the years he never stopped working on this and now it’s a big wonderful forest, teeming with life! This is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished with hard work, persistence and patience. A reminder that, even a little progress each day will eventually produce huge results. Our planet is small and everything alive is connected. When we put love and energy into living things they respond in kind. I love biographical stories, there are so many inspirational people out there. This is definitely one worth the read!

Counting On Katherine
By: Helaine Becker
This book is awesome 👏 It features the inspirational story of Katherine Johnson. She was an African-American mathematician who worked for NASA during the space race. She was an incredibly smart lady who broke down cultural barriers and joined the NASA space program. She also played a pivotal role in saving the Apollo 13 mission. Books like this are always in my rotation in class. I read this to my second graders and they were very interested. After we talked all about Apollo 13 🚀 I love biographical books
