Lou and His Mane
By: Emma Ugarelli
This is a lovely book about borrowing other people’s things without asking, problem solving and friendship! The illustrations are very age appropriate and fit perfectly with the text. About a lion who wakes up to find his mane is missing. He’s very upset about this and begins to fear that he will be bald forever. He tries to stay positive and determined to get to bottom of this mystery. He recruits some friends along the way to help him search. Finally he discovers his little brother, pretending to be him while wearing his mane. Feeling relieved he explains to his brother to please ask next time before he borrows it so he knows where it is. This concept is great for families with multiple children. Sharing and borrowing other people’s things is a common source of conflict in my classroom. Books like this are great way to reinforce what’s already been repeated by parents and teachers. I love that this book can offer a visual representation, of how the other person might feel if you borrow something without permission. Ultimately any story that helps to promote respect and empathy has a long term place on my bookshelf 👍 definitely check this one out!
