Ruby's Heart Song

By Debbie Nutley

Wonderful book about the magic of overcoming fears and finding your voice. It also comes with a corresponding song 😃 which was such a nice touch!

It follows Ruby, a cute penguin who is set to sing at the upcoming talent show. She’s both nervous and excited (“nexcited”), and talks with her friend Pengwee about her unique way of dealing with the jitters … by doing a “Jiggly Wiggly” dance.

However she still worries that her heart will beat too loudly on stage. Up there she’ll be the center of attention and every Penguin on the glacier will be watching.

Ruby’s friend, Pengwee, encourages her to focus on the music that comes from her heart, echoing the advice Ruby’s mom gave her about music being an expression of the heart’s true feelings.

At the Talent Show, Ruby begins to sing “Ruby’s Heart Song.” Despite a moment of doubt where her voice falters, she finds strength in her connection with Pengwee and the audience, leading to a joyful and uplifting performance that inspires everyone to join in her “Jiggly Wiggly” dance.

The students were already familiar with Pengwee the Penguin. So I figured first we should re-read “Pengwee’s Breath”, to help them make the connection. So we read the two books back to back and the kids had a great time 🥰 the writing is great and the creative language had them laughing almost immediately. After we read it, I played the song for the kids and we had an impromptu dance party 🥳

It’s great to see another book expanding on this “Penguin universe”. The Author, Debbie Nutley has created some seriously cute characters and we can’t wait to see these penguins again in future books.
