The Travels of Princess Buttercup and Westley: Bye-bye to New York

The third grade students had a great time with this book.

It’s a story of two cute little dogs (and their humans) who go to New York City as tourists. They visit popular places like the Empire State building, Times Square, Broadway and they even have a hotdog in Central Park.

It ends with dad giving an announcement to the family stating that New York was just the first stop on the trip and next they’ll be headed to Great Britain!

First, I read the book once over for everyone in the class to get a good understanding and then we used the book for group reading. Everyone in the class took turns reading out loud a paragraph at a time and we went through it a few times over. I like the length as well. It’s not too long, about sixteen pages in total so reading it in class is fine. The level is quite suitable for the third graders and the story concept allowed for an interesting creative writing assignment.

The creative writing homework assignment was this:
Princess, Buttercup, Westley and family wanted to go to the United Kingdom, but all the flights were full so they decided to go somewhere else. Where do they go? What happens when they get there? Write the story of their next adventure. Be creative, anything is possible… please include four or five specific activities that can be done in real life in the country they go.

The stories they came up with were fantastic. The kids presented their stories in front of the class. Some of them were hilarious, really creative. In one story they ended up visiting NASA and going to the moon in a rocket for lunch with aliens. Turned out to be a great writing assignment… looking forward to the next book.
