Maeve's Mighty Mission
By: Hannah Durbin
Here’s an interesting book about careers and being a citizen in a democratic society. About a spirited 10-year-old girl named Maeve on a quest to find her ideal career. Maeve explores various paths, including becoming a firefighter, coach, teacher, reporter, and mayor. Along the way, she learns about the joys and challenges of each profession. Ultimately, after a heartfelt conversation with her father, she discovers the importance of civic duty and the role of citizenship in a democracy. Eventually realizing that while she might not know her future career, she is proud to embrace the role of a responsible citizen. The story beautifully intertwines themes of self-discovery, public service, and the responsibilities of living in a democratic society. Read it with my fifth grade students. I love the topic, I love the enthusiasm and emphasis on our duty as citizens of a democracy. It’s educational and promotes participation in the Democratic process while still remaining politically neutral. Although I read it with my fifth graders, I think it can be suitable for older students who are beginning to think about potential career paths. This could also be an excellent addition to your social studies curriculum. I would definitely recommend this to teachers and to parents wishing to educate their children about different careers, voting, and how our society works. Also all proceeds support the “Salute to Citizens Scholarship” … more info can be found on the last slide of this post.

Big Frank's Fire Truck
By: Leslie McGuire
This book follows Big Frank on his shift at the fire station. It’s a busy day for Frank with all kinds of action, but it’s all in a day’s work for a firefighter 👨🚒 The illustrations are fantastic and compliment the text perfectly. I would recommend for first grade and up. Keep in mind, there’s so much info in here you might lose the younger kids. It covers most aspects of a firefighter’s job and is presented beautifully. Highly recommend it!
