Trick or Treat Little Critter
By: Gina and Mercer Mayer
Shoutout to Mercer Mayer 🙌 these books have been on our classroom bookshelf for the last month or so. When I was a kid I adored Mercer Mayer Books and now I make a point to sprinkle a few into the bookshelf whenever I can. The good thing is you have plenty to choose from, there’s always one or two that fit the time of year or a topic you want to emphasize. Great for the classroom or for bedtime, if you don’t have a set of these books already, you won’t regret picking them up!

Runaway Pumpkins
By: Teresa Bateman
“Runaway Pumpkins” has always been a favorite of mine. If you haven’t read it… you definitely should. This one’s a must have for the Halloween collection. Beautifully poetic writing style with a smooth rhyming structure. Accompanied by wonderful illustrations. About a class of children who go on a field trip to the pumpkin patch to get pumpkins for carving jack-o’-lanterns. They all go out there and hand pick all of their pumpkins and even load up a huge pumpkin on the roof. On the trip home, the latches to the bus open and all the pumpkins fall out on the bumpy road and roll down the hill into the town. When they arrive, they find they have no pumpkins in the bus, except for the one huge one on the roof. At first everybody was sad, but then they came up with a plan. They still had one pumpkin, so they all happily work together to make that huge pumpkin as beautiful as possible. Meanwhile the towns people collect up all the broken pumpkins and decide that they should make use of it. So naturally they bake up various pumpkin treats for everyone at the harvest fair the following day. I love the message about making the best out of every situation. There’s even a recipe for Caramel Frosted Pumpkin Cookies in the back!! Go check it out, This is definitely a book you’ll want to add to your collection.

The Ghosts Went Floating
By: Kim Norman
Just discovered “The ghosts went floating”! Such a fun book and perfect for this time of year 👻 🎃 Based on the ants go marching song but instead it’s Halloween themed. I read it with the first graders and they really enjoyed it. I read it once with them slowly in a standard story time way, we all looked closely at the illustrations which are fantastic by the way. They were already familiar with the song so we read it a second time in a “repeat after me fashion” to the tempo and rhythm of the “Ants go marching” song and… it was absolutely hilarious! This is a great book for getting kids into the spirit of Halloween. I love this style of artwork, I think the illustrator really hit it out of the park! I would say this book is most suitable for Kindergarten and first graders (3 - 6 years old). I like the counting and the infusion of a familiar children’s song was a nice touch. Really helps the young children stay focused and engaged. Definitely worth checking out!
