Snake Boys

Author: Chuck McCarthy

Here’s a quirky book that’ll get the kids laughing. The snake boys is a simple book about two snakes that do all kinds of unexpected things like “climb some rickety old stairs” or “find a drawing of three little bears”or “play tic-tac-toe with a basset hound“. The book is quite funny and has wonderful, very unique illustrations. Also, there’s a repeating mantra that appears several times. “Do the snake boys hiss with me…. HISSSSS!!!“. The kids thought this was absolutely hilarious, and I like the interactive element to this. Of course I over emphasized the “HISSSSS!“ which got everyone laughing and Hissing back at me 😂. In the hands of the right person this book has the perfect amount of quirky humor and interactive silliness. It ends by gently stating it’s time to go to sleep, which also makes it great as a bedtime book. Go check out the Snake Boys!! HISSSSS!

Pony The Moose

Author: Emily Mitchell

This book was such a fun read!! The kids enjoyed it so much, we read it twice over. About a young girl named Tabitha Ruth who dreams of owning a pony one day. They grow a lot of vegetables on the farm so her parents would normally say no to the idea of a pony. Little Tabitha had an idea she would go to the barn and clean it out, to create a nice little area for a pony in hopes that would sway her parents. So she cleaned up the barn and headed off to bed excited to have a place for a new pony hopefully. In the morning, she went out to check on the barn and realized she had left the barn door open. To her surprise there was a moose inside!! It wasn’t what she was expecting, but she embraces the moose, humorously naming it “Pony”. They quickly become great friends and to the amazement of her family and neighbors she trains the moose to wear a saddle and take her for rides. In the end her parents are so impressed they allow her to keep the moose and welcome the new family member. Before I read the book, I showed the second grade class some moose videos on YouTube. We learned some interesting facts and learned the difference between a horse and a pony and a moose. The writing is fantastic and has an excellent flow for reading out loud. It really helped to get the whole class engaged and I was able to over emphasize certain things which got everyone laughing. The illustrations are great and suit the text perfectly. This is a guaranteed winner, perfect when you’re looking for something light and funny. Excellent as a bedtime story or as a classroom read-aloud. Keep your eyes peeled for this one!

The Grinny Granny Donkey

Author: Craig Smith

Part of the popular Wonky Donkey series and guaranteed to get some laughs!! Written in the same repetitive progressive style… with a story that builds word upon word until she becomes a: grinny granny, plunky-plinky, swanky, clinky-clanky, zonky, dunky-drinky, clunky donkey. Had a lot of laughs reading this one, this series is worth checking out!

Who Pooped On Me

Author: David Cunliffe

If you’re looking for a lighthearted and silly book… This is the one! The concept is very simple if features a lizard in a tree, just minding his own business and all of a sudden… “SPLAT!” Nothing worse than being pooped on. The lizard goes on a mission to find who pooped on him. He confronts a few different animals asking if they were the ones that pooped on him. Of course they all say no, leaving the lizard frustrated he now has poop on him. A fly comes down and starts eating it telling him it’s delicious , leaving the lizard totally grossed out. Then it happens again… “SPLAT!“ They look up and realize a toucan is eating ice cream and it’s dripping down. This means that it’s not actually poop, it’s ice cream. The toucan offers some ice cream to the lizard and he gives it a try… Just then, “SPLAT!“ …. Ewww … ok that time it wasn’t IceCream 🤣 “who pooped on me?” Such a fun book, this is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. I like the simple concept, anything with poop gets the kids laughing. I like that there is also a great message about not jumping to conclusions… as we know, in life things are not always as they seem. Found this one in the library and we were not disappointed. I definitely recommend it, especially if you’re looking for something that’s funny and short and easy to follow. It’s a great little bedtime read but also pretty hilarious to read in class. Definitely a great addition to the collection.
