Theodore The Sloth Who Wants To Race
By: Dr. Sam and J. L. McCreedy
Here’s a fun rhyming book about perseverance and following your dreams. This book is all written in rhyme and the kids love the illustrations. About a sloth who dreams of being fast, he trains every day while the other slots would just hang around. The sloth’s tell him to slow down while he climbs around at a super fast speed (for a sloth). There was a moment when the sloth felt discouraged and questioned himself but fortunately he meets a smaller sloth, who had some good ideas. The small sloth decides to help him train, and the two friends went on to open the “slothing club for those who need to speed” and lived happily ever after. Before we read the book with the second graders we all watched some YouTube videos about sloths. After I read the book one time over, we then went around the class and took turns reading out loud. Each student reading a paragraph out loud, followed by a review of the vocabulary and info from the back of the book. The back of the book has some excellent information and worksheets about sloths. The vocabulary will be included in a spelling test at the end of the week. We enjoyed this book. Everyone thought it was pretty funny. Sloths are interesting animals that we don’t see in books very often, which I like very much. It worked really well in class and I found the “glossary of super words” at the back of the book to be a very nice touch. Definitely a book I would recommend checking out.
