Walking With Dad
Author: Andrew Abel
Great book celebrating the little moments in life that seem to stick with you. We’re always building memories and it often starts with regular everyday activities. I read this with my second graders and it went very well. Before I read it to them I chose some vocabulary words from the book that were new to them and prepared some writing and spelling exercises for afterwards. That was fun and now they have a spelling test coming soon 😃 After we read the book we had a great discussion about making memories. Why spending time with friends and family is important for making memories, even if it seems uneventful. I shared some memories that stuck with me from when I was a kid, looking at bugs with my grandma and camping with my dad etc. This book made us look at the simple interactions in life, a bit differently and also allowed me to revisit some beautiful memories of my own. I used it in class and it was good, but I would say the poetic style of writing and mellow tone makes it especially perfect for a bedtime story. Definitely a great addition to any children’s bookshelf!

Imagine Dad
Author: Aaron Spencer
Shoutout to all the fathers!! This book celebrates the unique qualities that make every father special. It follows Mrs. Wheeler and her class as they go on a field trip to visit the magical “Imagine Dad Factory,” where dads are created using special potions. They visit each station in the factory where potions are made to highlight different qualities… fun, caring, leadership etc. clearly showing that no two dads are the same. After the factory tour the students got back on the bus and as it drives away Drew says… “Wow, Dads are great.” I love this idea, it’s such a creative way to encourage children to reflect on the important roles fathers play in their lives and to appreciate the traits that make their own dads unique. The illustrations are amazing and bring the magical factory to life. This is such a great conversation starter, for discussions about family, dads and the unique qualities that make our dad’s important and special. Definitely a great book to add to the collection!

The Lost Lake
Author: Allen Say
This book tugged at my heart strings ❤️ camping was something my father and I did every summer. I look back on those memories fondly and cherish the quality time we spent in the mountains. About a boy who’s been hanging out with his dad all summer but he’s been busy working and the boy is bored. Dad recognizes this and decides it’s time to go camping in a favorite spot of his called “Lost Lake”. When they arrive it’s filled with people and really not the secluded paradise he remembers. They decide to press on and find a new Lost Lake. Eventually they discover a wonderful new place all to themselves. A much needed adventure for both of them and a great opportunity to bond and create a lasting memory. I love the watercolor illustrations and thoughtful storyline. Perfect bedtime read and powerful message about the importance of having adventures and spending quality family time out in nature. Definitely worth checking out!
